Securing Your Success for Decades
Crisis is an extraordinary, unplanned event that endangers the very existence of an organization or threatens severe damage. Recognizing early that you are facing a crisis, that your organization and external advisors lack the tools to handle the complex situation, and that immediate, professional management is required, can prevent mistakes that exacerbate the situation. Effective, professional crisis management facilitates rapid resolution.
The crisis before you contains the seeds of success and the roots of failure. As experts in crisis management, our successes are unheard of - and will remain so. These are the cases that never reached the media or the courts. Sun Tzu in "The Art of War" stated that winning all battles is not 'supreme excellence'. 'Supreme excellence' is achieved by subduing the enemy without fighting.

Understanding Crisis
The First Step: Rapid Identification
A crisis is an exceptional, unplanned event that threatens the existence of an organization or has the potential to cause severe harm to it or its surroundings. Such a situation becomes uncontrollable for management.
A crisis embodies both the nucleus of success and the roots of failure. Crisis management is the function that guides how to overcome a crisis, minimize damage and harm to the organization's reputation, while extracting advantages from the situation.
A crisis can stem from a serious malfunction that has gained significant publicity and public outrage or from ongoing activities of the organization whose exposure has caused public anger.
In this early stage, it is crucial to recognize warning signs, acknowledge the onset of the crisis, and understand that it has reached a point of no return.
Crisis Management: Unlike Anything You've Known Before
Expertise and Experience: Crafting Multidisciplinary Strategies and Implementing Specialized
Working "Outside the Box"
Crisis management is unlike anything previously encountered.
Traditional organizational measures such as public relations or legal proceedings may backfire, causing a 'boomerang effect' that harms the organization. These conventional tactics risk escalating into a protracted 'war of attrition' that doesn't resolve the crisis but rather exacerbates the damage, further jeopardizing the organization.
In crisis management, navigating these unique challenges requires innovative approaches and strategies that go beyond standard protocols.
Communication, Transparency, Availability
Communication: Clear, consistent, and timely communication is essential. It involves not only conveying information accurately but also understanding and addressing the concerns and questions of all stakeholders.
Transparency: Being transparent in dealings, decisions, and processes helps build trust and credibility, especially during challenging times. It means being open about the situation's realities, the steps being taken, and the potential impact.
Availability: Being readily available to respond to inquiries, provide updates, and engage with stakeholders is key. It demonstrates commitment and responsiveness, which are vital for maintaining confidence and managing perceptions during a crisis.
Expertise, Experience, Confidence
Expertise: Specialized knowledge and skills are fundamental. Expertise in relevant fields provides the foundation for informed decision-making and effective strategy development.
Experience: Practical experience is invaluable, especially in complex situations. It brings insights from past challenges and successes, enhancing the ability to navigate current
scenarios effectively.
Confidence: Confidence,
stemming from expertise and experience, is critical. It instills trust among stakeholders and teams, guiding them through uncertainty with assurance and decisiveness. Confidence in handling situations also positively influences outcomes, setting a tone of competence and resilience.
On the Process Ahead
After identifying and acknowledging the existence of a crisis, the process begins with a phase of information gathering and analysis, utilizing a variety of sources and technological means.
This stage includes pinpointing the strengths and vulnerabilities of the organization and its opponents, and formulating a strategy for crisis management. Additionally, a multi-staged, decisive action plan will be developed, including initiated escalation as necessary. Following the completion of this preliminary preparation, "groundwork" for action will be executed, unbeknownst to the adversary, to maximize impact.
Once this is completed, the phase of gaining control over the event begins. The more effective the early stages, the greater the likelihood of this phase being shorter and leading to a swift resolution. The goal will be to resolve and profit from the crisis, turning it into an opportunity. Subsequently, there will be a phase of assessing the organization's performance and devising a plan to "immunize" it against future crises.
It's important to note: A crisis event is traumatic for an organization. It's a defining moment, consuming significant resources - both financial and psychological. Therefore, a substantial part of the early preparation will involve expectation management and preparing for the anticipated challenges. Ultimately, every crisis event is also an opportunity.
The optimal outcome of a crisis will be, in addition to its resolution, the strengthening of the organization, identifying and addressing its weak points, and leveraging the situation for improvement, development, and establishing a future commercial advantage.
Essential Insights for Optimal Crisis Preparedness
How to Achieve Optimal Preparedness for a Crisis
-
Proactive Preparation: If possible, prepare for a crisis before it occurs! Early crisis preparedness can often prevent a crisis from happening in the first place. Even if a crisis does occur, being prepared in advance can significantly shorten response times, enhance response efficiency, reduce the duration of the crisis, and maximize the likelihood of resolving it in favor of the organization. We always prefer to guide our clients before a crisis occurs and develop a comprehensive "containment" plan to achieve these exact outcomes.
-
Avoiding Mistakes in an Ongoing Crisis: The best advice if a crisis has already occurred or is imminent is to avoid mistakes. Don't panic, don't make hasty decisions, and don't take independent steps that could worsen the situation and make resolving the crisis more difficult. The speed and efficiency of the response are critical. Immediately consult a crisis management expert (not just a generic lawyer, consultant, or PR professional, however skilled they may be in their fields). Crisis management is a real battle – there is no room for errors.
-
"Fog of War": The crisis manager is the supreme commander, the "strategist," who (and not the CEO or board of directors) leads the battle (in full cooperation with various management levels, of course). Avoid disseminating unnecessary information to those who don't need to know ("on a need-to-know basis"). Additional parties don't need to be aware that the organization is in or about to enter a crisis, its nature, and how you intend to act. They don't need to know who the chosen expert is for managing your crisis and certainly not the planned course of action. In crisis management, limited, strategic (sometimes distorted or misleading, even through third parties unaware of being used for this purpose) information is disseminated, all to aid in achieving the objectives.
-
Utilizing a Unique Toolkit: A true crisis management expert is not limited to the means familiar to you from your regular business environment. They will not automatically (and certainly not exclusively) recommend a legal campaign or a media blitz (especially not for self-publicity at your expense). These means (especially due to the difficulty in predicting their consequences and outcomes) are usually among the last to be used in crisis management. Effective crisis management will often lead to avoiding legal proceedings or at least resolving the crisis long before it reaches the courts. Remember: One of your campaign's goals is a quick resolution ("knock-out") and not getting dragged into a "war of attrition" that will wear you down along with your opponent.
